Register Variation, Historical Change, and Learner Language: A Corpus-Based Afternoon at ICAME46

After a vibrant morning and a relaxing lunch at Restaurant Grey, the afternoon at ICAME46 resumed with another round of parallel sessions starting at 14:30, continuing the day’s intellectual momentum.

Participants were treated to a rich variety of presentations that spanned the fields of historical linguistics, construction grammar, register and discourse analysis, and learner language research. Scholars delved into topics such as embedded inversion in Early Modern English, spontaneity in fictional dialogue, and the development of evaluative constructions. Meanwhile, others explored the use of large language models in corpus research, vague language across academic disciplines, and the phraseological development in L2 writing. With sessions running in parallel across multiple venues, the afternoon showcased the methodological diversity and theoretical depth that continue to define the ICAME community.

Together, the sessions highlighted the conference’s core strengths: empirical precision, interdisciplinary dialogue, and a shared commitment to exploring language in all its real-world complexity.

As the academic day draws to a close, participants are gearing up for this evening’s social programme:

  • A walking tour of Vilnius Old Town kicks off at 18:30, offering a taste of the city’s rich history and charm.

  • The day concludes with a welcome reception at Vilnius Town Hall at 20:00, where the conversation will continue over drinks, food, and new friendships.
